‘In creating the visuals for The Bluff, I used a special stash of expired Kodachrome. Heather’s cello—lilting between defiance and resignation—conjures that eerily familiar feeling of looking at faded faces on old film, captured in the midst of their last stand against entropy and time.’

DOMES is out in the world today! Comprised of 7

DOMES is out in the world today!

Comprised of 7 cyclical cello drone pieces that emerged from a quiet place of reflection and improvisation, Domes represents my first fully instrumental collection of work. These atmospheric meanderings began as a way to connect with the cello again - not just to understand what we can do with the instrument, but what the sound it emits can do to us.

The pieces feel, to me, like grounding sounds, strong, able to bear weight. They build and fall away, like the peaks and valleys of emotions, the gradual accretion and erosion of a landform, or the construction and deconstruction of an edifice.

The 7 pieces on Domes represent shape, support, and mass. They form a series of layered, repeated melodies which, in practice, made me feel calm, relieved, and curious. I hope it has the same effect for the listener.

DOMES is available today via @dauwlabel for limited edition vinyl preorder, cassette, and pay what you wish for digital/streaming on @bandcamp exclusively for 14 days. Streaming on all other platforms will be available after the 2 week period.

It feels like it’s been 200 years since I played

It feels like it’s been 200 years since I played a show. Despite the jarring shift to lockdown, after spending the majority of my life on the road, taking a break from touring has been good in many ways - and something I may not have chosen if left to my own devices. It has helped me prioritize things that are most important, let go of things that needed letting go, and given me the chance to dive into creativity and songwriting in a deeper way. I thought I’d be sharing a lot of new music this year, but the delays at pressing plants have pushed things out. So, next year it is. I hope it feels like riding a bike when I finally do get back on a stage, but I can’t wait to play new songs loud, outside of the house when the time comes!

It was an absolute pleasure to spend stints of 2018 on tour with my good friends @aleladiane & @mirabaipeart! After our tours we decided to record a live album of all the tunes we’d been playing together - to capture these versions of Alela’s beautiful songs that we’d really settled into as our folky trio. Happy Solstice and Happy Holidays!

Despite the challenges of the year, I have so much to be thankful for. My heart goes out to those who have been suffering and those putting their lives at risk to fight the many viruses, old and new.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me through music and other ways this year. It means the world. I look forward to sharing a lot of new things in the new year, and I’m hopeful that things will begin to turn around.

In between writing for my next releases I’ve been enjoying writing some instrumentals. This one always felt like some kind of lullaby or carol. Sending love, warmth, and hope to you all.

Soundcheck recording of a song I never recorded or released. This was our one and only run through of this song back in Dec 2015 while out on tour in support of Glider. We never performed the song in front of a live audience, but looking back at this video I’m reminded of how fun and inspiring it was to play with the likes of @namesofwar & @jasonbemislawrence on this tune and all the music we’ve made together. Basically I miss touring! And playing music with friends! Fondly remembering this tour with these guys + @jessemarchant @guttersparrow

Hard to believe my first record was released 11 years ago! When I started writing my own music I never imagined I’d write songs with words. I was much more interested in classical composition and ambient drone music. This record is a document of sorts in that shift, as it’s a split of songs with words and instrumentals.

I, like many others, have a hard time knowing what

I, like many others, have a hard time knowing what to say in response to the recent displays and retaliation against systemic racism and oppression. I understand that as a white individual I have privilege that I have underutilized. I understand that I have contributed to the problem. I am ashamed that so many people of color have been harmed or had their lives taken by the hands of white supremacy and hatred, and at our collective lack of action against it. I am deeply disturbed, angry, embarrassed and grief stricken at the current state. I know I cannot change the past, and I know that in order to prevent history from repeating itself we need to stand together peacefully, be persistent and loud, remain as active as we can to promote change on any level that we are able. There are so many ways to participate in positive change. There is so much information available. We can all do more. I will do more, I will speak up, I will stand up, I will donate, I will educate myself, I will remember the names of those who have been murdered as a result of our complicity, I will learn, and I commit to this active participation long term with love and solidarity.
